I can safely say, I am proud of my looks. In my 20s, I was a sociable young girl extremely responsive to the fact that I caused men to turn their heads as I passed by. I never had a dilemma with the opposite sex. My problem was envious girlfriends. To date, 2 decades on, I still manage to appeal to men's interest.

But in these final 10 years, things have been different. I have been troubled by a vast stretch of bad breath. This is something that has held me back massively in all aspects of my life. Because I was acutely aware of the problem, I felt my self-worth go downwards. All my life, I have been dedicated to sound oral hygiene, but the bad breath would simply not quit. In fact, it seemed to get worse over time.

eager to cure this dilemma, I tried everything. Different toothpastes and mouth washes. I changed my toothbrush each month. I could loose my keys and money, but would never leave home without my mini toothbrush and dental floss. I even chewed on parsley each morning for a time because I was told it was an ancient antidote. But no. Nothing helped.

With no Medicare or an alternative health insurance, I was forced to save money. Finally, I bundled all my savings to pay a visit to my dentist. Gum disease was detected. In fact, my gums are frail and bleed often, which has influenced the care of my teeth, which are weak, yellow and some are even moving. I am clearly heading towards loosing some teeth. There didn't seem to be a motive for this as it was clear my oral hygiene traditions were indeed outstanding. So I was sent for a head scan. My dentist saw there was another problem there that had to be diagnosed.

The scan showed the situation was much more troubling than basic gum disease. It showed an odd lining that crossed from my nasal cavity right down to my bronchus. Puzzled, my dentist had me off for a battery of tests. With the results back, I was directly recommended to a specialist.

The diagnosis was incredible. The wrongdoer of my bad breath was nose drops. A full check-up was proof that halitosis was the least of my crisis. And it all sunk in for me then.

Just under 10 years ago, I recall feeling a cold. Nothing special. It was a cold. Nothing more than a cold. I took the usual healers from the pharmacy - an aspirin for the heavy head, drops for the nose, lots of lemon tea and a few steaming baths.

But I remember it did take ages to disappear. So, I headed for the pharmacy to get anything stronger, and was recommended to proceed with the nose drops to help me breathe better at night.

I didn't see, at the time, just how long ago that was. All the influenza symptoms went away, except the blocked nose. I continued with the nose drops, because I couldn't breathe without their help.

That was 10 years ago. For 10 years, I have been addicted to nose drops. I never went for medical aid to heal my addiction because I never understood this as an addiction. Nose drops! Who would have thought it would be so damaging?

All this time, I never supposed so much trouble would come of this. But I now see the culprit for my heavy head, bags under my eyes and a heavy chest. My throat is always filled with mucous, and my lungs cant seem to take in all the air I need. Even climbing a set of stairs has become a test for me. My cardiovascular system has also been affected. Heart failure, or congestive heart failure, where the heart doesnt pump sufficient oxygenated blood to match the requirements of the body's other organs. A heart attack, or myocardial infarction, is also a threat.

So, now I am getting ready for surgery. Four surgeries, to be precise. With an estimated healing time of 6-9 months. It will also include a full exercise program of body building, created to strengthen my destroyed muscles and tendons.

I am paying a heavy price for my naivety. Had it not been for bad breath, I would be paying much higher. Halitosis may seem a simple situation that irks you for bad oral higiene, but it may well be the revealing sign that something much more dangerous is damaging your health. At the end of the day, bad breath saved my life.

And to imagine that all this was brought on by a simple bout of flu that was not cured completely

A huge "Thank you!" goes out to the wonderful sites which helped me research for this article - Medicare system, Cardiovascular Disease, bodybuilding and bad breath cures.
